CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Scarlett and Runeclaw followed the path laid out for tourists visiting the cavern until it ended abruptly at an overlook. Beyond this peninsula of raised stone stood a huge chamber that soared high above and dropped another fifty-plus feet below. An iron railing had been built around the perimeter beyond the cautioning rope to ensure no one stumbled and fell over the edge. Scarlett leaned over, looked down, and whistled. “That would hurt, falling there.”

“Seems like a liability issue. Probably should have built a high wall. People are dumb. Present company included.”

She stuck her tongue out at him. “I’m pretty sure the waiver we signed takes care of that. If I recall, it had a specific ‘do not step off the path’ clause.”

“Do you think people follow it?”

“Probably not back in the safe chambers. I doubt anyone messes around here. That kind of drop would discourage even the most mischief-inclined individual.”

He stepped back from the edge. “We’re going to though, right?”

Scarlett knelt, removed her jacket, and extracted the rope hidden underneath. “We sure are.” She tested the strength of the metal railing and judged it would be more than adequate to handle their weight. She knotted the rope around it, then wrapped and knotted it one more time for good measure.

“We’re not going to have any rope left at the rate you’re going.”

She put her jacket back on. “Do you want to fall to your death?”

“Have you forgotten that you have magic? Why are you messing with the rope?”

“What if there are more of them with backpacks waiting down there? Or a natural area of anti-magic?” She shook her head. “No point in taking a greater risk than we need to.”

Runeclaw suddenly looked thoughtful. “Are there such things as pockets of anti-magic?”

Scarlett shrugged and wrapped the line around her and through the carabiner on her reinforced belt. “Not sure. I know there are places where it’s stronger than others, so it stands to reason there are also places where it’s weaker.”

“That’s surprisingly logical, coming from you.”

“You’re such a sweetie. Come on, let’s go.”

Runeclaw arranged himself on her shoulders and dug his claws in so he wouldn’t fall. She added a force shield to keep him in place, ensured all her protective shields were still active, and climbed over the railing with her gloved hands locked around the rope in a death grip. Or, in this case, an avoid-death grip, she supposed.

Scarlett stepped back off the ledge, dangled, and slowly played out the line. The supple gloves she’d picked up at the store protected her hands. The heavy shirt and pants she’d traded for her usual outfit did the same for the rest of her.

The lightning ball she’d summoned floated beside her, the magic maintained by a corner of her mind. She peered around as she descended one arm-length at a time in search of any indicators of trouble but found none other than the danger of dropping to the rocky ground.

It made sense that if their foes delayed them
